Artist Statement
I make portraits and scenes by utilizing drawings and paintings. My artwork presents concepts I am driven to communicate to those that enjoy narrative works. My images convey moments that possess an expression, experience, or notion; therefore, encouraging viewers to further consider their emotions on a subject.
Biography
A native of Miami, FL., Jelani K. Thomas uses his creative talents and design knowledge to breathe life into his artwork. Mr. Thomas is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC., and produced the official logo for his alma mater in 1999. Mr. Thomas attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in Illustration (2002). In 2004-05 he was named the Harris Teeter Oustanding New Teacher of the Year Award for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County School System, and the Olympic High School New Teacher of the Year Award. In 2013-2014 he received the Claflin University Center For Excellence in Teaching Spotlight Award for the School of Humanities And Social Sciences. In that same year he received the Certificate of Excellence for service to the Claflin University Art Department, for performance in the classroom and a commitment to excellence.
Mr. Thomas currently resides in Los Angeles, CA. In addition to commissioned artwork and displaying in gallery shows, he has been a visual arts educator for 14 years. Mr. Thomas is excited about his ongoing growth and development as an artist and arts educator.
